Wu Yibing becomes first Chinese man to reach the US Open third round since 1881
The 2017 third round of US Open began at 8:00PM ET.
It was not a good day for the top players. The 2018 US Open third round is scheduled for 7:40P MET.
Wu Yibing is the first Chinese man, after 1881, to reach the US Open third round since it was founded in 1881.
The only Chinese player to defeat a US Open champion in his career is Lendl Simmons of the 1998 US Open.
“I did not play a lot of matches until this year. I was struggling a lot because of the practice schedule,” Wu said, when asked about his struggles.
“But I want to make it to the U.S. Open, it is my life. I want to enjoy and make all the dreams come true,” he said.
Wu has an easy path into the US Open. He is ranked No. 1 in the world. He just needs to beat No. 14-ranked John Isner on Saturday to advance to the 4th round.
“It’s not easy, but I have a better idea about how to play and I am confident,” said Wu, who said the last time a Chinese man has reached the US Open third round was in the 1950s.
“I learned a lot when I was playing tournaments overseas in China. I like to play with my mind full of energy. I have a good plan of working and working hard to achieve my goal.”
Isner’s victory on Sunday was also a surprise for many. Isner had been at the top of the world rankings for months. Then he lost in the third round at the US Open.
Wu’s loss was unexpected. Just 10 days
