Serena Williams finished the 2013 season (she had won all of her singles at the USO) ranked world #1 in singles. She was the first woman to ever do that but was still only 22-years old. To say that Williams is a top player in her age group is an understatement. In some ways her season could be viewed as the pinnacle of the career that she has had. She was the dominant player in America and she had just won the grand slam of grand slam tennis.

Williams had had a very good year, which started with her win at her first title in 2011, the US Open. In 2012 she started the year by winning the Australian Open. That was the first time she had won Australian Open since she won it in 2000. Williams had become the first woman to win the Australian Open in the top 20 since Steffi Graf in 2002. That year Williams won all four grand slams singles. She was the first to win a Grand Slam title on the Australian and French servers. Williams won all four of those major titles
