In the end the same players who had met so memorably at Wimbledon ended up competing on that hallowed grass surface.

Djokovic was the top seed but he was also the only player who could be written off as a favourite after having been written off before.

Medvedev had lost two of their five previous meetings in this tournament and had only won one of their four meetings here.

But the 23-year-old beat Djokovic in the fourth round, and the world No 1 saved four match points to get through the second set in just one hour and nine minutes.

Djokovic and Medvedev, both former champions, were determined to put some distance between themselves and the last time they had met at a major.

But while Djokovic had his problems with his positioning against Medvedev in the first set, he found his form in the second.
